null Commissioner for Fundamental Rights Gives Talk at International Conference


Dr. Ákos Kozma participated in and gave a talk at the conference entitled “Human rights – An important factor of the sustainable development of states” in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on 23 February 2024.  Digitalisation, disability, equal opportunities and the role of National Preventive Mechanisms were some of the key topics of the international conference co-organised by the Uzbek Ombudsman, and among others, by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), as well as the specialized organs of the UN.


 

In his speech, the Ombudsman provided information on the extension of the responsibilities and competences of the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights of Hungary, with special regard to the activities performed in relation to the protection of the rights of the most vulnerable social groups, and he also presented the activities of the independent mechanism supporting, protecting and controlling the enforcement of CRPD. 

From 1 January 2023, the Ombudsman fulfils the responsibilities of the independent mechanism under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in Hungary. With the Disability Directorate-General of the Office of the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights, such an organisational unit with strong authorisations has been established which represents a specific independent mechanism, compliant with the requirements of CRPD, in the interests of the rights protection of Hungarian persons with disabilities.


 

In the framework of the conference, Dr. Ákos Kozma held bilateral meetings, among others, with Uzbekh Ombudsperson Ms. Feruza Eshmatova, Mongolian Ombudsman Mr. Khunan Jargalsaikhan, Moroccan Ombudsman Mr. Mohamed Benalilou, as well as President of the National Coordination of Italian Ombudsmen Mr. Marino Fardelli. As part of the bilateral talks, the ombudspersons exchanged their views on the bilateral professional relations between their institutions, the development and strengthening thereof, as well as the possible ways for future cooperation.
